Sister of American held in Russia says he didn't know he was being released until he saw U.S. flag
Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American citizen and retired teacher, has been released from Russian custody after four years of imprisonment. According to his sister, Patricia Hubbard Fox, he was unaware of his impending release until he saw the American flag upon boarding a plane. Hubbard had been sentenced in 2024 to nearly seven years in prison on charges of fighting for Ukraine, allegations that both he and the U.S. government disputed. His release followed a reported request from President Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.
